Like most of us, ever since I was a schoolboy I have been used to this map of the world.

As you can see, Russia is easily larger than the entire continent of Africa. Even Greenland rivals with Africa on this map. I forgot that this map is a two-dimensional representation of a sphere (which is three-dimensional), and when you do that things get deformed in the end-result.
So, one day a co-worker shared a website that displays the true size of countries (link below).
I was stunned: Russia, in fact, is much smaller than the continent of Africa.
Moreover, this is the real size of the United States compared to Africa.
And this is the actual size of Greenland:
